After the departure of Heather McKee from the role of SAFAF Convener, I have been confirmed to take on the position. For autobiographical context, I study at an undergraduate level at Queen Mary University of London. I have been a member since autumn of last year and previously was on our Steering Committee.
We must again thank Heather; her work was foundational for SAFAF, and she has fiercely led the fight for free expression with all the effort she has put in. Alas, now her flame-haired ferocity must be fully dedicated to completing her master’s dissertation. The organisation was founded in May 2024, steadily increasing its numbers as the months went by. Pivotal foundations were laid down to accommodate an expanding group, such as the foundation of the aforementioned Steering Committee. With the help of AFAF and our other connections, we have been able to gain a presence amongst a considerable number of universities up and down the country, but there is much more to be done.
Over the coming months, SAFAF will continue to grow and transform. There are - and will be - many exciting plans and developments coming thick and fast, so stay tuned to all our social media and this Substack for any updates or news. Suffice to say that there will be no rest for SAFAF, for free expression evaporates in idleness, and never has there been such a time in this country where that free expression is being systematically smothered.
The forces of suppression may feel emboldened at this time, although this is due to a growing sense of change coming on the horizon, creating a growing fear of losing control. SAFAF, along with AFAF, will continue to campaign for vigorous openness on campuses, especially at a time when these Isles and the world feels as if it is approaching a crossroads between freedom and authoritarianism . There has never been a more consequential time for action; every man, woman, and organisation related to or in academia can play a part in shaping its future. We plan to continue our growth across more universities and use every reasonable outlet to further our righteous cause.
"Seize the day, and put the least possible trust in tomorrow."
